Founded in 2017, BOLD Dance Co., LLC (BOLD) is a nonprofit youth development organization committed to addressing the academic, social, and developmental needs of young people through a comprehensive model that integrates performing arts, academic support, leadership development, mentorship, and community engagement.
Our mission is to equip youth with the confidence, discipline, and critical life skills necessary to succeed academically and thrive as responsible, engaged members of their communities.
BOLD serves more than 100 youth annually from diverse and often underserved backgrounds across the Charleston area, beginning as early as age two and continuing through high school completion. Through structured, high-quality instruction in ballet, jazz, hip hop, contemporary, majorette, liturgical, and other dance disciplines, participants develop not only artistic proficiency but also essential life skills such as perseverance, teamwork, accountability, and self-confidence.
Recognizing the strong correlation between academic performance and future opportunity, BOLD integrates daily after-school tutoring, homework assistance, academic mentoring, and educational enrichment into its programming. Approximately 60% of participants consistently engage in these academic support services, receiving targeted assistance in core subject areas including reading and mathematics, as well as study skills and academic accountability. This dual-focus model ensures that students are supported holistically, reinforcing both their educational attainment and personal development.
These competencies are foundational to both academic achievement and long-term personal success.
In addition to academic and artistic programming, BOLD prioritizes leadership development and civic engagement. Participants actively engage in community service initiatives such as neighborhood clean-ups, food and clothing drives, holiday outreach efforts, and performances for local organizations. The organization also facilitates travel opportunities for regional and national competitions, intentionally incorporating educational experiences that expose students to diverse communities and cultural perspectives.
These experiences broaden students’ worldviews, strengthen cultural competency, and foster a commitment to civic responsibility and lifelong learning.
BOLD demonstrates measurable outcomes that reflect program effectiveness and impact. The organization maintains a 100% high school graduation rate among alumni who have reached graduation age, underscoring its commitment to sustained academic support and youth development. Additionally, BOLD alumni have gone on to attend respected institutions of higher education, including Jackson State University, Howard University, The American Musical and Dance Academy (AMDA), South Carolina State University, Claflin University, and Bethune-Cookman University, among others.
To further reduce barriers to participation, BOLD has awarded 20 scholarships since 2017, ensuring that financial constraints do not prevent deserving youth from accessing our high-quality programming and enrichment opportunities.
Central to the organization’s success is its team of dedicated instructors and mentors who provide consistent guidance, structure, and encouragement. Many participants face economic, social, or environmental challenges, and BOLD serves as a stable, supportive environment where youth can build resilience, develop positive relationships, and gain a sense of belonging.
Families are actively engaged and become part of a broader community that prioritizes the success and well-being of every child.
